Yellowstone National Park was our last stop on our car-trip before getting back to our RV. We stayed at the Stage Coach Inn in West Yellowstone which was the nicest hotel during our car journey. It had a lodge feel with a lot of taxidermy.. It had a cool vibe! We grabbed lunch at Subway and for 2 six inch subs and 2 waters it was $27 bucks. Yes we had double meat, but still! We realized in the the town of West Yellowstone was going to be pricey. We had a $130 dinner with entrees and apps. We were right, Yellowstone had tourist pricing. It's okay because we had a great 3 day stay.
West Yellowstone (hereinafter referred to as WY) had a lot to offer in terms of restaurants, shoppes and stuff. It was conveniently located close to the WY entrance to the park.
Our first half day in Yellowstone was Geyser City. Before we arrived we knew about Old Faithful but had no idea there were 500 living-breathing geysers, paintpots, mudpots, hot springs and fumeroles. It was pretty amazing and educational at the same time. They were colorful and soupy and it was like the earth was alive and living! Check out the pics and videos below and you'll see what we're talking about.
We ran into Yogi on the ride back to the hotel...it was wild! He ran about 20 feet in front of our car and int the woods. It was amazing seeing such a creature so close. we were glad we were in our car.
The second day we spent twelve hours in the park. We toured the northern part of Yellowstone this day. It included a drive from the Madison Visitor Center up to Norris and all the way to Mammoth Hot Springs and the Albright Visitor Center. The highlights in between were Gibbon Fall, Twin Lakes, Monmouth Hot Springs, Undine Falls and a couple cliffs.
Brad took a mile backcountry hike to see Wrath Falls while Kathy took a little rest. He found it exhilarating hiking alone keeping a look out for bears every step of the way. Brad did run into a handful of other hikers along the way which was comforting. The last pic below was Kathy back at the car.
After, we ran into a heard of bison. There were more than fifty of them just graising in the grass....it was a gas...can ya dig it? Please see the video below.
From there we headed to Tower Falls which was beautiful.
On the way home there was a huge bison limping in the middle of the road. He had a broken back leg. It was dangling. Kathy was very concerned for his safety and well-being. Brad, not so much.
It was now getting dark outside and Brad avoided a different bison coming around a corner. He had to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid hitting him. Luckily there were no cars coming the other way. This bison was within 5-6 feet from the car. His big-ass head was bobbing like a bobblehead in our windshield. Catastrophe avoided. Exciting but wait, there's more. Next, an elk runs in the road but luckily for us he high-tailed it to the same he came from. It wasn't nearly as close as the second Buffalo incident but concluded a crazy drive back to the hotel and an action-packed day at Yellowstone.

On our third and last day at Yellowstone our goal was to see the south east portion of the park that will permit us the bragging rights of having seen the entire park. We started at west Thumb Geyser Basin. After tha,t the highlights of the day were Yellowstone Lake, Gulf Lake Drive, Lake Village, Mud Volcano, Sulphuric Caldron. The Lower and Upper Falls were probably our favorite landmark of the day. Yes, we love our Falls but those living-breathing geysers were back. Check them out below!
We had Chinese food for dinner but we were so excited that the next day we'll be back at our RV. We are looking forward to not living out of a suitcase and eating out two meals a day. We're only and hour and forty-five minute drive from our RV in Idaho Falls. Yay! Yellowstone was and awesome way to close out the 13 day and 3500 mile drive back to RV living.
