We stayed in Corpus Christi an extra day due to 50 mph wind gusts. Luckily, San Antonio was only an hour away so we got there early enough to take advantage of a full first day. First, we watched the Eagles lose to the Bucs. The hour difference in posted TV game start times and us being in the central time zone goofed us up again. Brad had to listen to the first quarter on the radio. He was stressing, not watching it on TV. Kathy let him watch all 18 games this season and being on the road that was a huge sacrifice she made for him throughout the season. The Eagles lost so Kathy gets a break on Sundays now moving forward. Then we went to a section of town known as the Pearl. The Pearl was one of Texas largest breweries beginning in 1883 and brewed beer until 2001. It was an eclectic area with restaurant, bars, coffee and bakery shops. It had a big green in the middle of the space for socialising and it was a stones throw from the Riverwalk (more on that later). They incorporated this gigantic brewery, it's relics and artifacts into the ambiance of the place. It was popping! We ate at this place called the Boiler Room. It was fun...watching the Cowboys lose (Sorry Chris:0). Brad was a hater before he loved you!
With the Eagles season behind us, we got a full day of touring San Antonio in. First stop was the Alamo. Brad digs the history side of these stops. Kathy not as much, but what they both agreed is that Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie and the 140 men that fought to their death were true American heroes. After the Alamo we took a boat ride around the beautiful and wonderful Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. Wow, we loved the boat tour and after we went back to an attractive beer garden picture 5 below) and Boudro, a restaurant recommended to us. The service and the food were both impeccable. We hadn't had a campfire in a month or so. It was nice to be able to do that at the KOA.
We did a 20 mile bike tour of the Missions the next day. The missions are a deep rooted part of Texas history . These enclaves were constructed in the late 1700's by Spain. These Missions were utilized to teach the indigenous people how to better hunt, ranch, and house themselves. And at the same time, these people agreed to learn Catholicism in trade for improved housing and protection. We went to three missions, San Juan, San Jose, and San Concepcion. San Jose was clearly the biggest, prettiest and gets the lion share of the pictures below.
Our last day in San Antonio was a doozy. We did a day and a night viewing of the Tower of America which was built to celebrate the 1968 Worlds Fair. It is a 750 foot 1000 stair skyscraper with a restaurant and observatory on the top three floors. Which by the way a 15 year-old set the record and climbed to the top in five minutes and 15 seconds. Nice workout, aye? The grounds of the Tower were beautiful. It was a bunch of cascading waterfalls, bridges and greenaries surrounding the building. If you want to see more of it message us and we'll send you a pretty cool video. At the Tower, they also had a 4D video of the history of Texas. We went back at night and had dinner at the rotating Chart House. It was good but not great and a bit overpriced as would be expected. After dinner we went up to the Observatory for a glimpse of the City at nighttime. After dinner we went to the San Fernando Cathedral for a super-awesome and very-very entertaining video and audio light show. They project it right on the cathedral as the backdrop for the show. It was wonderful! We then walked the Riverwalk to check it out at night. A great day! Not to shabby for two old farts, aye?
