More Than Just The Land Of the Giants

For our trip to Redwood National Park, we stayed at Elk Country RV Park in Trinidad, California and guess what. That wasn’t just a random name. There were like, 100 Elk that made the RV Park their home. We were given instructions not to look them in the eye and stay 25 yards away because it was birthing time and the mothers will attack with their front hoofs. The woman registering us said someone went to the hospital last week. First thing Brad wanted to do when we finished hooking up the RV at our site was go see the Elk. We woke up to Elk at our site every morning. It was actually delightful. It didn’t stop Brad from cooking outside either.
We knew that we were going to be along the Pacific coast but didn’t realize the beauty of a huge national forest on the mighty Pacific ocean. You know we love the beach. However, the beaches are beautiful but not for swimming. The water temperature average is 53 degrees and the waves won’t let you in. Beside the fact that it was cool and sometimes cold outside. Over the few days we were there, we took hikes to beaches that were absolutely magnificent. We sat on the beach to watch the sunset. And took a drive to Crescent City and hiked to a lighthouse up on a hill that was beautifully landscaped and the views were breathtaking. If you look in one of the pics Kathy hurried back from the lighthouse because the tide was coming in. She didn’t feel like swimming back in 50 degree water.
And then there is the forest. Holy cow those trees are huge. One thing we learned is that the redwood is fire and disease resistant and the never die. when they fall, new sprouts grow from the fallen tree.
We did more hiking in Redwood than any other place. Ok, not really hiking, more like strolls through the forest and extended pathways to the beaches. We gave you a few photos of our strolls so we didn’t bore you with 5 days worth. Our favorite trail was Trillium Falls. It was like an enchanted forest and the cool part was there was a class of high school students taking a biology test. One of the boys offered us assistance taking a pic of a big tree. He took Kathy’s phone and did a sideways pano. Check it out below along with Brad’s video of Trillium Falls. Sorry the pano takes up a lot of real estate, but keep scrolling for the ending.
Oh and check out the touristy spot we went to. You drive your car through a tree. Kathy drove while Brad took pics. She hit the tree with the rear view mirror. 😂

It was our 14th anniversary while we were at Redwood National and there’s not many fancy restaurants, but we found one on the internet that looked like it would be accepotable. Turned on the GPS and off we went. It took us to a casino. Yep that’s where the restaurant was. Surprisingly, dinner was delicious and the scenery was great.
Next stop Oregon. Stay tuned and thanks for following us on our journey. Kathy and Brad

How is it they can carve a tunnel for a car in a redwood? How does that not compromise the tree's structure? That's crazy.
As you go up the coast from Crescent City you will go thru the small coastal town of Oregon. my daughter and her husband live right off the Coast there. I’ve been there several times. It’s such a beautiful place. If your still in that area I know some great places to eat and hike.
Another wonderful entry. Thanks for sharing! Although it does look like Brad is taking a leak on a redwood in that one pic where he’s peering up at the giant, 😂
So pretty and the trees are so awe-inspiring. They really sort of put things into perspective, these extremely tall and long-lived giants. I’ve only seen them from that stand on the other side of GG Bridge from SF. But have always wanted to see the North coast. Y’all are so lucky.
OMG, there is SO MUCH to see in Oregon, how can you choose what to see and what to miss? I’ll be waiting with baited breath And fingers crossed! 😂
